Ongoing Armed African Conflicts

Sudan Conflict

Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a violent power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This internal conflict has precipitated a severe humanitarian crisis, with millions displaced and widespread food insecurity.

Burkina Faso Insurgency

Beginning in 2015, Burkina Faso has faced escalating violence from jihadist groups, notably Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM). The conflict has resulted in significant civilian casualties and displacement, with May 2024 marking one of the deadliest periods.

Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) – M23 Offensive

The resurgence of the M23 rebel group in 2022 has intensified conflicts in the eastern DRC, particularly in North Kivu province. Despite regional peacekeeping efforts, the situation remains volatile, with ongoing violence and displacement into 2024.

Ethiopia–Somalia Tensions

In 2024, military cooperation between Egypt and Somalia, including the deployment of Egyptian troops to Somalia, has heightened tensions with Ethiopia. This development has raised concerns about potential conflicts in the Horn of Africa.

Mozambique Insurgency

Since 2017, Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province has been the epicenter of an Islamist insurgency led by Ansar al-Sunna. The conflict has caused significant displacement and humanitarian challenges, with regional forces assisting in combating the insurgents.

Nigeria – Boko Haram Insurgency

Active since 2009, Boko Haram and its splinter group, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), continue to perpetrate attacks in northeastern Nigeria. The insurgency has led to thousands of deaths and displaced millions, with ongoing military efforts to quell the violence.

Somalia – Al-Shabaab Insurgency

Since 2006, the extremist group Al-Shabaab has waged an insurgency against Somalia’s federal government. Despite international military support, the group maintains control over rural areas and continues to execute attacks, destabilizing the region.

Mali Conflict

Beginning in 2012, Mali has faced insurgencies from various armed groups, including jihadists linked to Al-Qaeda and ISIS. The conflict has spread to neighboring countries, contributing to regional instability in the Sahel.

Cameroon – Anglophone Crisis

Since 2016, Cameroon has experienced conflict between government forces and separatist groups in its English-speaking regions. The crisis has led to significant displacement and human rights abuses, with ongoing calls for dialogue and resolution.

Central African Republic (CAR) Civil War

Ongoing since 2012, the CAR civil war involves government forces and various rebel groups vying for control. The conflict has resulted in severe humanitarian issues, including displacement and insecurity.
