In a recent opinion piece published in The Jerusalem Post, Neville Teller, Middle East expert and author of ‘Trump and the Holy Land—The Deal of the Century’, argues that strengthening ties between Sudan and Israel could pave the way for humanitarian relief and regional stability. While Teller is sharply critical of Sudan’s internal challenges, he highlights the country’s shift away from Iranian influence as a positive development. He also explains the context behind Sudan’s temporary overtures to Iran, responding to a previously published report, noting that “none of that translates into Burhan leading Sudan into becoming Iran’s newest proxy.” Rather, Teller attributes those overtures to a lack of Israeli support at a critical time in Sudan’s internal conflict, writing that Burhan turned to Iran in 2023 only because “Israel, wary of becoming entangled in Sudan’s civil conflict, had refused to provide him with military support.” Teller underscores the strategic value of renewed direct talks with Israel, citing recent outreach by Sudanese officials expressing a clear desire to revive the Abraham Accords and deepen cooperation. He views this as a timely opportunity for Israel to play a constructive role in Sudan’s recovery and regional repositioning.
