Kerry – Karti Phone Call
Latest news said the Sudanese foreign affairs minister Ali Ahmed Karti received a phone call from the US secretary of state Mr. John Kerry; the two ministers discussed ways of improving US-Sudan relations. SUNA, the official Sudanese news agency disclosed that Karti reminded Kerry “the broken American promises on lifting sanctions from Khartoum”.
According to SUNA, Kerry expressed his country’s desire to hold “direct negotiations” with Sudan on bilateral issues.
In reality, no progress; the relations between US and Sudan represents no logic, it represents Thomas Hopes’ theory on “the state of nature”, in which all parties are wicked and selfish!
Look at this paradox, Washington admits Sudan’s cooperation in counterterrorism, but still fixing Sudan at the top of the list of the international sponsors of terrorism!
From an angle of view you can see different indicators, US secretary of state John Kerry met Ali Karti at the 50th anniversary African Union summit in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa in May 2013, the meeting was described by media as a big breakthrough but the US Envoy to the two Sudans Mr. Donald Booth has not visited Khartoum since last December after Khartoum had stopped discussions on the “unjust” American sanctions, saying US policy is determined by extremists and lobbies not by Obama Administration.
The US Policy toward Sudan and South Sudan has been thoroughly discussed again at US Congress. On February 26th of 2014, the Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organization, at the US Congress held a hearing session chaired by Mr. Christopher H. Smith, the Representative in Congress from the State of New Jersey, the chairman of the Subcommittee.
Four participants were there with their prepared statements, Mr. Donald Booth, the US Envoy to the two Sudans, Mr. John Prendergast, Dr. Walid Phares, and Mr. Adotei Akwei.
Dr. Walid Phares is the Co-Secretary General of Transatlantic Legislative Group on Counter Terrorism. One of his four recommendation suggested direct involvement in Sudan.
It says: “Washington should call a UN Conference to gather representatives from the central government in Khartoum as well as from the four – marginalized- regions in order to initiate talks on the future of the Sudan in light of its multiethnic identity”
Calling for UN Conference on Sudan’s crisis needs direct American talks with Khartoum, here we can open a new chapter in controversial US-Sudanese relations.
